How to read AED/USD history

Days without a quotation are not interpolated: the series keeps only observations that were actually received.

Understanding the AED/USD pair

The AED/USD exchange rate indicates the value of the UAE dirham (AED) against the US dollar (USD). This directed pair shows how many US dollars are needed to purchase one dirham. It is widely used by businesses engaged in trade between the UAE and the United States, as well as by tourists and investors. An appreciation of the AED means that the dirham strengthens relative to the dollar, making UAE exports more expensive and imports from the US cheaper.

The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar since 1997 at a fixed rate of approximately 3.6725 AED per USD. This peg is maintained by the Central Bank of the UAE, which manages monetary policy to support the fixed exchange rate. The US dollar is managed by the Federal Reserve, which sets interest rates based on domestic economic conditions. Because of the peg, the AED/USD rate remains extremely stable, with only minor fluctuations within a narrow band. Key drivers include the relative strength of the US economy, oil prices (as the UAE is a major oil exporter), and capital flows between the two countries.

Over the past several years, the AED/USD rate has remained virtually unchanged due to the fixed peg. The rate has consistently stayed near 0.2723 USD per AED (the inverse of 3.6725). Any slight variations are typically due to market micro-structure or temporary supply-demand imbalances, but the peg ensures long-term stability. This makes the pair one of the least volatile in the forex market, appealing to those seeking predictable exchange rates for trade and investment.
