How to read BMD/EUR history

Days without a quotation are not interpolated: the series keeps only observations that were actually received.

Editorial analysis

Understanding the BMD/EUR pair

The BMD/EUR currency pair measures the value of the Bermudan Dollar against the Euro. As a directed quote, it indicates how many Euros are needed to purchase one Bermudan Dollar. This pair is relevant for travelers, businesses, and investors with exposure to Bermuda's tourism and reinsurance sectors, as well as for those trading between the US dollar-pegged Bermudan Dollar and the Eurozone's single currency. An appreciation of the BMD means that one Bermudan Dollar buys more Euros, making Eurozone goods cheaper for Bermudan importers but reducing the Euro value of Bermuda's exports.

The Bermudan Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar at a 1:1 ratio, so its value is effectively determined by US monetary policy set by the Federal Reserve. The Euro is managed by the European Central Bank (ECB). The interest-rate differential between the Fed and the ECB, along with relative inflation and economic growth in the United States and the Eurozone, are primary structural drivers. Bermuda's economy relies heavily on international business (especially reinsurance) and tourism, making the pair sensitive to global risk sentiment and travel demand. Commodity prices and capital flows between the two regions also play a role.

Over the past several years, the BMD/EUR rate has largely mirrored the EUR/USD exchange rate due to the peg. When the US dollar strengthened broadly, the BMD gained against the Euro, and vice versa. Periods of Eurozone economic uncertainty or divergent monetary policies between the Fed and ECB have led to notable swings. Without specific historical data, the pair's trajectory can be understood through the lens of US-Eurozone macroeconomic divergence and global risk appetite, which influence capital flows into or out of dollar-denominated assets and the Eurozone alike.
